In search of Mom and Pop motels that are restored and lovely

In Search of a Mom and Pop Motel that can use some word of mouth advertising.

I decided about 2 years ago that I needed to move out of Southern California, Carlsbad no less.  I would go walk on the beach where nobody else would sit, I would go walk around the Harbor where no one else walked.  As I reflected on my Southern coastal lifestyle, I realized it was time to move on.  In thinking about where to live I took to google earth..I spoted a beautiful marina in central Oregon: Newport.  And that is where my plan began.  I am going to move to the central coast of Oregon.

Oh my, I feel in love with the Oregon Coastline.  I did a fair amount of traveling, more than 40,000 miles in less than 2 years in my tired old Mercedes.  I had many adventures along the way.  I stayed with friends, family and strangers as well as a long 2 weeks in a two room tent, and several low cost motels.  As I visited these small 20 room or less hotels, I discovered something very exciting, at least for me...there is a new generation buying up run down Motels and restoring them and turning them into a viable business.

Many years ago, I came across a small hotel in Yucca Valley, Ca that I wanted to restore and turn it into a simple high desert hotel and I wanted to call it, 'The Bunk House'.  Rock Climbers were the major population in that area due to Joshua Tree National Park.  Needless to say, I could not get the owners of that little motel to let go of it.  Not sure who owns it now some 20 years later, but it is in operation.

'The Bunk House' is what started me on the journey of exploring the small local hotels.  I have stayed at many in my travels but I know there are so many more to visit.  My desire is to bring attention to these family owned small businesses.  They are not Flea invested and they are not dirty, they are spotless and they are very pleasant.  Of course there are still those out there that are not the best, but I have found they are running out the riffraff and overall improving the property.

As I share this experience with you, I must say, this is a journey I am going to take you on, or you can take me on; lets find the best little mom and pop motels and bring attention to all their hard work, and it is hard work.  These small business owners have a passion and I hope to share that passion with you!  My intention is to visit and interview these motel owners...  I will start with what is local and go from there.

Do you have a Motel that you love?  Lets start sharing these great locations and see where this observation takes us.
